The Westerkerk Amsterdam is a beautiful church located in the heart of the city. It is one of the largest churches in the Netherlands and has long been a prominent landmark in Amsterdam. The church was built between 1620 and 1631, making it one of the oldest Protestant churches in The Netherlands. Its design is typical of Dutch Protestant churches, with its soaring spire which reaches an impressive height of 85 meters (280 feet). Aside from its impressive size, the Westerkerk also has many interesting features, including its intricate entranceway (the Prinseneingang), its stunning stained glass windows made by Willem Witsen and a beautiful organ case designed by Robert Valk. Inside, you will find no less than seven different chapels, each with their own unique artworks. There are also several monuments dedicated to prominent people associated with Amsterdam’s history that can be found inside, such as those for the sculptor Erasmus Grasser and painter Cornelis van Poelenburch. Every Sunday morning during summertime, visitors can enjoy free concerts on the Westerkerk’s terrace; these concerts showcase both renowned classical music artists as well as up-and-coming talent from all around Europe.
